Le Precurseur by Eugene Trigoulet: When the Baptist's Death Lights the Cell (1894)
The sword has already fallen. In Eugene Trigoulet's Le Precurseur (1894), Saint John the Baptist kneels headless in a stone cell, wrists still bound as if in prayer, while his severed head lies on the floor and throws out a blast of white-gold light. Blood spreads into the clear shape of a Latin cross. The executioner stands in shadow with a curved, stained blade and stares as if the miracle had arrived a second too late.
