About Sapiens Verbum
Sapiens Verbum is a one-person project about looking closely at paintings and photographs. It is made by a retired amateur who has loved painting and photography since childhood, and who would rather let the work speak than put his name on it.
How it started
It began with a camera. I opened the YouTube channel RelaxingTrails4K to share my photography, and it soon grew into video: quiet walks and drives filmed in 4K. Sapiens Verbum came next, as a way to spend time with painting, the other passion I have had since I was a boy.
Both channels are hobbies, and I treat them that way, with patience and curiosity. What keeps me going with Sapiens Verbum is discovery. For every famous masterpiece there are hundreds of remarkable paintings that almost nobody talks about: works kept in museum storage, forgotten in old catalogues, or hanging in a side room most visitors walk past. Finding them, learning their stories and sharing them is the best part of this work, and I learn something new with every one.
What you will find here
- sapiensverbum.com: essays on paintings, famous and overlooked, often with a video on @SapiensVerbum. Start with Explore Art.
- daily.sapiensverbum.com: art news from museums, auction houses, discoveries and restorations, with the painting behind each story.
- photography.sapiensverbum.com: my own photographs of Spain's coast, cities and light, with licensing.
- books.sapiensverbum.com: reading recommendations on art, photography, philosophy and history.
- prints.sapiensverbum.com: museum-quality prints of the paintings and photographs.
How the essays are made
- Public domain images only. Paintings are reproduced only when the artist died more than seventy years ago and the image comes from a museum open-access collection or is marked as public domain on Wikimedia Commons.
- Facts are checked. Dates, titles, owners and stories are checked against museum records and reliable published sources. If something cannot be verified, it is left out. Legends are presented as legends.
- Tools. Research and drafting are assisted by AI tools; every essay is fact-checked against museum records before it is published.
- Corrections. If you find a mistake, please write to me. Errors are corrected, and news corrections are noted on the page itself (see Sources and Corrections).
How the project is supported
Everything on Sapiens Verbum is free to read. The project is supported by prints of the paintings and photographs, by occasional affiliate links to books (as an Amazon Associate, this site earns from qualifying purchases), and by advertising.
